OFMSW plants
OFMSW Biogas Plants
OFMSW biogas plants provide a sustainable solution for the recovery and valorisation of large volumes of organic waste from households and commercial and industrial sources, including large-scale retail and the Ho.Re.Ca. sector.
Through anaerobic digestion, the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW) can be converted into renewable energy, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and waste disposal costs.
The main feedstocks that can be processed include:
Source-separated OFMSW collected through door-to-door collection
Commercial food waste
Expired or non-compliant products
Would you like to valorise your organic waste?
How OFMSW biogas plants work
OFMSW is a heterogeneous biomass with a high impurity content. An OFMSW biogas or biomethane plant therefore requires dedicated pretreatment systems to remove unwanted materials and ensure process efficiency.
Based on the impurity content and the waste collection method, we select the most efficient reactor configuration, either CSTR or PFR.
When designing an OFMSW biogas plant, it is essential to consider the implementation of:
- Pretreatment systems for impurity separation, grit removal and, where required, sanitisation
- Post-treatment systems, such as composting to optimise the quality of the solid digestate and aerobic processes to complete the treatment of the liquid digestate.
The energy generated can be used directly in on-site operations or exported to the national grid. Biomethane, on the other hand, can be injected into the gas grid or used as a transport fuel.
Environmental benefits of an OFMSW plant
An OFMSW plant enables organic waste recovery and therefore drastically reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill or incineration.
Anaerobic digestion enables:
- Valorise the digestate by separating it into:
– Liquid fraction, which can be treated using technologies such as ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis or evaporation prior to discharge into receiving water bodies
– Solid fraction, intended for biostabilisation and conversion into composted soil improver - Reduce odour emissions and improve leachate management
- Ensure a treatment chain compliant with environmental and regulatory standards
Economic benefits of an OFMSW plant
An OFMSW biogas plant provides a tangible opportunity to generate economic value from organic waste.
The main economic benefits include:
- Production of electricity, heat or biomethane for on-site use or sale
- Lower energy procurement costs
- Reduced waste disposal costs
- Profitable integration into a circular economy model
An OFMSW plant can turn a challenging waste stream into a strategic resource, delivering long-term benefits for both the company and the environment.
